This is a quick read provided by the South West Shore Development Authority
(SWSDA), mandated to create and manage economic and community projects to bring
positive benefits to Shelburne and Yarmouth counties and the Municipality for the
District of Clare.

Did You Know? will be coming to you via e-mail on a timely basis to inform you of the
ongoing activities and projects in your area.

Clare/Yarmouth/Shelburne
Immigration Partnership
The South West Shore Development Authority, in partnership with the Western Counties
Regional Library has formed an Immigration Partnership committee to look at
immigration issues such as settlement and retention. The group includes partners from
education, private and public sectors and many other organizations from the region. The
formation of the committee is a result of the region's effort to better accommodate
newcomers and immigrants to our area and to examine how the region can improve upon
this. The committee met twice and the first activity of the partnership is planned for May
31 at the Rodd Grand Hotel and Convention Centre in Yarmouth. The South West Shore
Development Authority and the Western Counties Regional Library will host an evening
of networking, information sessions and dialog. The session is open to anyone interested
in immigration. It is designed to bring together immigrants and interested local residents
to discuss how to make the region a more welcoming community. For further

Resource Directory
The Resource Directory is a database of businesses, non-profit organizations, and
government agencies in Yarmouth and Shelburne counties, listing all pertinent contact
information and a brief description of the goods or services. Users can search the
directory -- located under Directories at www.swsda.com -- by county, sector, and type
of entity. The data is being thoroughly updated and businesses and organizations within
the Municipality of the District of Clare will be added. The project is designed to improve
communications within the region and beyond; to provide information on assets and
needs within the region for planning purposes; and to provide regional information for
those who might wish to visit or move here.

Tourism Development
The tourism task group, established in January, is working with local groups on tourism
product development such as new shoulder-season events in the Yarmouth area. One
event will highlight the lobster industry beginning late June on Yarmouth's waterfront. A
motorcycle rally in September will fill the gap between the Yarmouth Cup International
Yacht Race weekend and the return of the NHL New York Islanders for their fall training
camp. The work on developing a plan for a world-class aquarium/marine centre of
excellence is receiving some interest, and first approval was received to provide funds for
a program called Total Market Readiness. The program will be offered to as many as 50
tourism industry operators. It provides professional support to help operators focus on
improving relationships, cross selling, sharing information and pooling resources for
better results.

Shelburne
Computer Training
A pilot computer course exclusively for seniors was held in March at Shelburne Campus,
NSCC. The initiative was a partnership between South West Shore Volunteer Services
and Community Access Program (C@P), projects of the South West Shore Development
Authority. South West Shore Volunteer Services has a mandate to help seniors; C@P
provides affordable computer and Internet access to the community, and computer
training. The course included general computer training and an introduction to word
processing, the Internet and e-mail, and picture processing for first-time users. The
success of the course and positive feedback from the 10 participants has led to discussion
of future courses in the region.

Energy
Influential leaders from the energy sector are gathering on May 12 and 13 in Yarmouth
for the Nova Scotia Chambers of Commerce Energy Opportunities Conference 2006. The
conference, hosted by the Yarmouth and Area Chamber of Commerce, offers an
unprecedented opportunity for Nova Scotia businesses and the public to hear directly
from the decision makers on the future of energy in our province. The conference will
include a tour of the Pubnico Point Wind Farm and a session on energy issues with
speakers and panelists, including Chris Huskilson, President and CEO of Emera; Charles
Demond of Atlantic Wind Power Corp., who will speak about wind power; David
Hughes of Natural Resources Canada, who will discuss national and international energy
supplies and demands; Doug Bloom, President of Maritimes and Northeast Pipeline; and
Jeff Matthews, Irving's Senior Manager of Business Development. Representatives from
the Nova Scotia Department of Energy, the Utilities and Review Board, Nova Scotia
Power Inc., Heritage Gas, the South West Shore Energy Office, and Anadarko will also
speak. Roger Bedard of the Electric Power Research Institute of California will provide
insight on Nova Scotia's emerging tidal power industry. For further information, or to

L'annuaire de ressource est une base de données des entreprises, des organisations et des

Développement touristique

introduction au traitement de texte, l'Internet et le courriel, et au traitement d'image. Le

L'Energie
Les chefs influents du secteur énergie vont être à Yarmouth le 12 et 13 mai pour Nova
